Mission and objectives:

Almishkat is a non-commercial institution devoted to

advancing knowledge on contemporary Egypt ant Arab

countries, through research in the social sciences, with

emphasis on human development. Almishkat recognizes the

critical need for basing social science research on high-

quality data sets and gives priority to producing such data

sets through rigorous (held surveys in areas on which

information are generally lacking.

 

R and D activities/schemes:

Fields of research emphasis include: knowledge acquisition

(ejucaticn/learning and research/development),

employment, governance and welfare (poverty).

 

Public services:

Technical reports on research projects, normally produced in

limited numbers, are generally made available to interested

professionals free of charge. For the general public, however,

abridged versions of these reports are published through

reputed publishers having solid distribution networks.

Almishkat bears the entire cost of publication to enable the

publisher to sell the resulting booklets at a subsidized price

calculated to just cover the distribution cost

Future development plans and programmes:

Almishkat is conducting for the State of Bahrain, in

collaboration with the Centre for Educational Research and

Development, Ministry of Education, an ''Assessment of

Educational Outcomes at the End of the First Cycle of Basic

Education'' The study instruments include tests for

competency in Arabic and mathematics as well as

questionnaires for the pupil and household, teachers and

school directors.

Almishkat is providing facilities for the incorporation phase of

the ''Arab Society for the Advancement of Learning'' as a

non-governmental, non-profit, voluntary institution based on

selective membership and interdisciplinary and devoted to

the advancement of learning, with emphasis on continuous

learning throughout life, in Arab countries.

Almishkat is to publish, in collaboration with the Centre for

Arab Unity Studies in Beirut, a two-volume book on ''Human

Development under Capitalist Restructuring in Arab

Countries in the Last Quarter of the Twentieth Century''

summing-up the Center's research activity in this field in the

last five years. Volume l investigates human capital

accumulation, with emphasis on basic education in Egypt,

while Volume 11 deals with employment and poverty. The

Centre is negotiating to publish an abridged version in

English.

The director of the Centre has teen invited to serve on the

steering committee of the ''Strategy for Higher Education in

Arab Countries'' established by the Arab League Educational,

Cultural and Scientific Organization.

 

Funding:

Source(s). A number of research projects, mostly with Arab

and international organizations, have provided necessary

financial support to the Centre.
