National

Working Languages:

Arabic, English

Areas of activity:

Applied science and technology: Water desalination

Mission and objectives:

ADST aims to promote the improvement of water supplies through desalinating, reuse and other water sciences and to encourage the exchange of state-of-the-art treatment technologies. The major goals and objectives of ADST include the following:

  • Conducting ant coordinating Egyptian desalination activities, nationally, regionally and Internationally',
  • Encouraging R and D and appropriate utilization of desalination technology and water use;
  • Promoting training activities in desalination;
  • Encouraging and promoting environmentally responsible and efficient use of technology',
  • Serving as a public forum to provide information on desalination-related subjects, water reuse and other solute- solvent separations'
  • Offering technical diplomas in desalination technologies, desalination plant operations and maintenance',
  • Establishing contacts between researchers, clients, consultants and equipment suppliers'
  • Promoting awareness of the true value of water and its augmentation by desalination.

Organizational structure:

The Board of Directors includes staff members of Egyptian

Universities, institutes and research centres, in addition to other high ranking officials from the public sector and ministries. The Scientific Committee includes a number of international consultants in desalination.

R and D activities/schemes:

ADST conducts studies and projects to generate specific information needs for regional development in the area of water desalination ant reuse.

Training activities:

ADST develops and conducts courses and curricula. lt also develops capacity building programmes for national academic institutions and the industrial community. During

October 2000. ADST offered a technical diploma in the

"Fundamentals of Desalination Technologies' and a similar event was scheduled for 19-24 May 2001.

Meetings, conferences and seminars:

ADST coordinates regular regional and International meetings and workshops. Recently, a workshop on 'Desalination Technologies: Future Trends and Economics'' was held luring 7-8 February 2001.

Public services:

ADST serves as a consultative body for the huge desalination projects along the Northwestern coast of Egypt and in the Sinai Peninsula. It also provides studies, information and statistics related to water desalination in the region and publishes them through different information channels.
