Mission and objectives:

CDC is an interregional Centre serving the developing countries of Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe ant Latin America,

Its main objectives include the following:

- Providing educational opportunities to persons working in the field of population;

- Undertaking research in population and related felts;

- Providing technical assistance and consultants services in population and related felts to interested governments and organizations;

- Organizing national ant regional conferences ant seminars on population ant related issues;

- Planning and conducting training programmes in population and related gelds.

 

Organizational structure:

CDC is an independent institution sponsored and financed by the Arab Republic of Egypt; It is headed by an administrative board and has an advisory committee and seven technical committees.

 

R and D activities/schemes:

The Research and Survey Unit carries out demographic research ant surveys, in addition to field studies in areas such as: Population and demography, population dynamics, population ant development, population policies and programmes, use of computers, demographic surveys, economics and sociology, demographic analysis and migration.

Research projects in progress include:

- Use of Composite Indicators in Measuring Health Levels (A Study of Health Surveys in Egypt, by agreement with the Academy of Scientist Research and Technologic;

- Labor Force ant Unemployment in Egypt;

- Contraceptive Use ant Infant and Child Survival;

- Women's Status, Fertility and Contraceptive Use in Egypt;

- Extended Use-Effectiveness of Contraceptives.

 

Training activities:

CDC offers academic educational programmes at four levels:

- General diploma in demography;

- Special diploma in population and development;

- Master of Philosophy (M, PhiI.) in Demography;

- Post Graduate diploma in population and sustainable development in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)(1994 - 2000).

In addition, CDC organizes the following training programmes: Demographic surveys; population projections; statistical analyses, reproductive health; environment and sustainable development issues; population/crime and security; personal computer; population policies, strategies and programmes; gender issues and women's empowerment; population information and communication; ant English language for demography.

 

Meetings, conferences and seminars:

CDC conducts an annual conference in which the students and faculty actively participate. Distinguished demographers and graduates Of the Centre are invited to participate. The 30th Annual Conference on Population, Sustainable

Development ant Globalization Challenges in Developing Countries was held in November 2000.

 

Public services:

CDC offers advisory services in population and related gelds.

Library facilities, including Demographic Health Surveys (DHS) data, are available to visiting scholars and students of demography outside the Centre.

 Main research facilities/equipment available:

The Computer Lab has more than 100 modern personal computers including Pentium 11 and 111 PC's, Power Macintosh and Apple Macintosh. Moreover, there are laser printers, data show, scanners, paper-ports and Criticizers. The lab is equipped with the most recent demographic, statistical, programmeming languages, databases, geographic Information system and word processing packages. The Centre is connected to the Internet through the Egyptian Universities Network.

 

Major achievements, scientific results and patents:

UNFPA in New York approved of giving full accreditation to

CDC as an executing agency for UNFPA.
