Mission and objectives:

EMA's mission is weather observation and forecasting.

 

Organizational structure:

EMA is heated by a board of directors and comprises the

following departments/units: Information Centre, Planning

and Follow-up, Control and Inspection, Organizing and

Administration, International Affairs, Legal Affairs, Public

Relations, Security, Technical Office, Central Statistics,

Follow-up Office, Central Administration for Finance and

Administrative Affairs, Engineering Affairs, Scientist

Research, Training, Central Administration for Analysis and

Forecasting, Central Administration for Stations, Instruments

and Meteorology

 

R and D activities/schemes:

EMA undertakes research studies on issues such as

environmental pollution and climate change.

Training activities:

Training is provided by the Regional meteorological Training

Centre (RMTC) of the Authority and includes the following:

- Specialized training and qualifying courses for employees of

the Authority and for the foreigners, including: Training senior

meteorologists on forecasting, data processing, climatology,

agrometeorology and numerical predictions; Training of

technical observers on the meteorological analysis,

climatology and agrometeorology.

- Training in institutions and universities through programmes

related to the meteorological applications in universities, civil

and military institutions.

- Observers Training: RMTC trains Meteorologists observers

and technicians of the Authority, in addition to candidates

from the Arabic, African and Asian countries in the fields of

repair, maintenance and calibration of the electronic ant

classic observing instruments used in the Meteorological

station. Special training courses on micro-electronics of

instruments used in the meteorological field are also

provided.

 

Meetings, conferences and seminars:

The Authority contributes to conferences, meetings and

international seminars organized by the World Meteorological

Organization (WMO) and the International Civil Aviation

Organization (ICAO) in the different branches of

meteorology.

 

Public services:

EMA provides climatological data to all the sectors in Egypt

and exchanges such data internationally to be used in the

scientific research related to agriculture, industry,

environmental pollution and other activities.

EMA provides services for civil aviation, marine, tourism,

agriculture, construction and housing planning. In addition,

EMA is designated by WMO to be a regional centre for

instrument calibration and maintenance in Africa.

The Authority receives many group visitors whether from

schools, universities or research and scientist authorities to

be acquainted with its activities.

 

Publications:

Non-recurrent: Climatical Atlas of Egypt.

Recurrent: Monthly and annual climatological reports.

On//ne material: Four-days weather forecasts in Egyptian

cities, cloud forecasts and other services are available on

EMA'S web site.

 

Links to other organizations:

The Meteorological Authority has strong relations with

international organizations such as ICAO, the International

Oceanographic Commission (IOC), the Intergovernmental

Panel on Climate change (IPCC) and others.

 

Parent body/affiliations:

EMA is affiliated to the Civil Aviation Sector of the Ministry of Transport.

 

Main research facilities/equipment available:

EMA has a mainframe IBM 4381 computer to operate

numerical weather prediction and other scientist motels,

store and retrieve meteorological information and issue

weather charts

The EMA library includes scientific references in the fields of

meteorology, in addition to a big number of publications

related to meteorology as physics, astronomy, mathematics,

chemistry and a great number of dictionaries of several

languages such as English, French, German, Italian and

Spanish.

 

Future development plans and programmes:

- Upgrading automatic observing system in Cairo Airport

Forecasting Centre;

- Establishing of a database in EMA;

- Establishing of upper air stations in El-Farafara and Qena,
