Mission and objectives:

EPRI is a research and development institute supporting the petroleum industry in Egypt. The objectives of the Institute as stated by a Presidential Decree in 1974 are to supply the national petroleum industry with basic and applied research for its development as well as contract research and services. Shod, medium and long term scientist objectives are assigned by the ministry of Petroleum and its affiliated companies.

Organizational structure:

EPRI is comprised of seven research divisions, which include

21 departments, namely:

- Exploration Division includes three repayments:

Setimentology, Bleantology and Geophysics;

- Production Division includes three departments: Drilling-

Fluids, Production Mechanics and Enhanced Oil Production;

- Analysis and Evaluation Division includes three

departments: Gas Chromatography, Spectrometric Analysis

and Standard Methods;

- Reining Division includes three departments: Chemical

Reining, Catalyst and Physical Refining;

- Petrochemical Division includes three departments:

Petrochemical technology and Biocides, Surfactants and

Macromolecules;

- Applications Division includes three departments: Special

Applications, Asphalt and Additives;

- Operations Development Division includes three

departments: Reactors and Operation Engineering, Special

Operations and Energy and Materials Engineering.

The board of EPRI is chaired by the chairman of the Egyptian

General Petroleum Corporation. Five of the board members

are from the sectors of the oil industry. The board integrates

the institute's activities with the national plans set for the

petroleum industry.

In addition, the Institute established a number of technical

service centers which are autonomous. Each is headed by a

chairman and directed by a board of directors, These centers

are responsible for developing and commercializing research

activities of promising applied results. These centers are:

- Exploration Production Service Centre;

- Centre for Storage Tank Servicing;

- Scientific Centre for Asphalt Applications Service;

- Materials Services and Development Centre.

R and D activities/schemes:

Principal areas of research include petroleum production,

refining and exploration, catalysis, petrochemicals, products

application, evaluation and analysis, process design and

development, geology, pollution abatement, energy

conservation and economics.

Training activities:

EPRI provides training programmes for industry, research

centers and private organizations.

Meetings, conferences and seminars:

EPRI organizes conferences and workshops, such as

training for Arab and African personnel workshops in

collaboration with the United Nations Industrial Development

Organization (UNIDO) and/or the United Nations

Development Programme (UNDP).

Public services:

EPRI over the following technical services:

- Inspections for pipe coatings, tank services, core analysis

and PVR analysis;

- Engineering design, techno-economic studies, consultants,

training, analyses and small scale production.

Publications:

Non-recurrent: Various publications within the petroleum

geld,

Recurrence Egyptian Journal of Petroleum.

Links to other organizations:

EPRI maintains links with the Egyptian General Petroleum

Corporation (EGPC). It is member of the World Association

of Industrial and Technological Research Organizations

(WAITRO) and collaborates with UNIDO and UNDP.

Parent body/affiliations:

The Institute is affiliated to the Academy of Scientific

Research and Technology (ASRT) in Cairo and to the

Ministry of Scientific Research.

Main research facilities/equipment available:

The Institute has the following research facilities:

- Statistics Unit;

- Library;

- Specialized centers in the felts of services for petroleum

tanks, production, asphalt and other materials preparation;

- Measuring instruments (PVR and core analysis, mud and

cement X-ray analyses, electron microscopes, gas

chromatograph, infrared and ultraviolet).

Major achievements, scientific results and patents:

The results of 26 research and technical studies have been

developed to the demonstration and production scale luring

the third five-year plan (1992-1997) in the form of new

technologies. Local resources were used as substitutes for

imported products.

The results of the following research projects were applied:

Upgrading of asphalt and asphaltic mixture; prevention of

sludge formation in crude oil tanks.. production of chemicals

used by the petroleum industry.

Future development plans and programmes:

Thirteen research programmes have been discussed and

approved by the petroleum sector and interpreted into

research and development projects. In addition, EPRI plans

to:

- Erect a modern Pilot Plant to make use of research results;

- Establish joint investment companies to cover the needs of

local markets and export potential;

- Raise performance of EPRI'S personnel of all levels through

advanced training courses;

- Collaborate with similar foreign institutes through twinning,

alliances and joint research projects.
